Hedwig and the Angry Inch - A Review

I love movies, but have always felt there’s something extra special about going to the theater. I’m in awe of people who can get up on stage and transport an audience to another place and/or time for two or three hours with no option of retakes, editing or action-packed scenes to distract the audience from humdrum performances.  On stage, being good-looking is not enough, there has to be talent too, whether in acting, singing or dancing or, in the case of plays like Hedwig and the Angry Inch, all three.

True Detective - A review

I’ve just finished watching ‘True Detective’ on HBO On Demand.   Personally, I think this eight part series was brilliant and I’m glad I ignored some of the early reviews about the first episode which tended to be critical, especially with regard to some of the dialogue between the two cops. Rustin Cohle’s philosophical ramblings were an integral part of his character which played fittingly into the story line and provided a perfect foil for the down-to-earth attitude of his partner, Marty Hart.

When I started this blog, I assumed I would post book reviews, something which up to now I have been remiss in doing. The problem is that I love to read so much that reviewing each book read would seriously cut into my writing time. Besides, writing a well thought out review is a skill in itself and not one that I feel particularly adept at.

Wadjda - Movie Review

It’s early to be making predictions about what movies might be nominated for Oscars next year, but I’d be very surprised if Wadjda did not appear in the Best Foreign Film category. The story, of a 10-year-old girl who is determined to own a bicycle and race against a neighborhood boy despite both activities being frowned upon within her society, is at once charming, educational and chilling.
